General Grant, past president of the United States, and his wife Julia, are buried at 122nd Street at Riverside Drive. In 1972, the National Park Service and CITYarts, a local arts organization, commissioned the creation of seventeen mosaic benches around the General Grant National Memorial. The benches were led by artist Pedro Silva but had assistance by professional artists and community volunteers.
